Control Engineering Module 1

This course is intended for sea going engineers who are required to operate, maintain and to repair various control systems found on-board. This ten (10) days course covers all aspects of marine instrumentation and control systems both existing and modern control methods and equipment and is tailored to maximize the practical aspects of the work carried out on board.

The course essentially deals with (1) basic principles of instrumentation; (2) principles of automatic control; (3) practical marine control loops; (4) practical calibration methods and problem-solving techniques in control system faults; and (5) pneumatic energy control systems and circuits.

In general, the course highly contributes in meeting the competency requirements relevant to Operation & Maintenance of Electronic and Control Systems specified in Table A-III/1 of the STCW Code, as amended, in preparation to becoming an operational level/officer-in-charge.

COURSE AIMS & OBJECTIVES:
The course aims to provide the fundamentals and basic understanding of instrumentation, automation, alarms, monitoring and control systems which is the basic for the ship’s automated control systems.

In effect, it shall enable participants to interpret instrumentation symbols and control circuits involving process control. To realize this, the participants must be able to identify corresponding automation components and its function to control the operation of ship’s main and auxiliary machineries.

COVERAGE / PROGRAM FOCUS:
This course essentially deals with the following subject and training areas:

  • Introduction to Instrumentation and Control System
  • Piping and Instrumentation and Control Diagram
  • Calibration
  • Pressure Measurement
  • Level Measurement
  • Flow Measurement
  • Temperature Measurement
  • Viscosity Measurement
  • Transmitters
  • Practical Marine Control Loop Strategies
  • Final Control Element
  • Automatic Control
  • Pneumatic Control
